BibliographyMaine postal history can be explored in:The Post Offices of Maine A Rarity Guide by The Maine Philatelic Society is the best post office list with scarcity ratings. Maine Postal History and Postmarks by Sterling T. Dow is more comprehensive, but very dated. You can access my online guide of Maine Post Offices here. MarketMaine is one of the slower states for postal history. Beyond a small hardcore group of collectors, there is little demand. As damning as this may seem, it represents an improvement over previous years. There is a lot of Maine material available, much of it is 19th Century, and it is one of the few states left where stampless covers are both cheap and ubiquitous. It is a very worthy state to collect. Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Maine rates as the 31st state in terms of percentage of cover sold at 51.71%. It ranks 19th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.66%. The overall rank is 25th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are declining. |
