Market

Maryland was once seemingly permanent place on the bottom ten of postal history demand. Over the years, the situation has improved. Where once I had three or four boxes of Maryland covers, now I can't fill a single box. In this era, most new collectors of state and local postal history enter the hobby via the internet, This has favored the more populous states, Maryland among them. The most serious collectors seem to collect statewide, bur there is some demand by county. Montgomery is in very strong demand. However, while a populous urban and suburban county now, it was much more rural and ex-urban even 50 years ago, making covers quite scarce. Suburban Washington and Baltimore counties are stronger than the counties in the eastern and western parts of the state.

2001-2002 Update: Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, Maryland rates as the 5th state in terms of percentage of cover sold at 72.26%. It ranks 26th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 1.41%. The overall rank is 7th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
