South Carolina

Bibliography

South Carolina literature is scarce. The only selections are:

South Carolina Postal History and Illustrated Catalog of Postmarks 1760-1860  by Harvey Teal and Bob Stets is a great book, with a far too narrow time period. It contain pre 1860 post office information and a catalog of known markings.

South Carolina Post Office and Postmasters 1860-1865  by Harvey Teal and Bob Stets again covers only a very narrow period.

You can access my online guide of South Carolina Post Offices here.

Market

Collector interest in South Carolina and Georgia for years jockeyed for last place. All things being equal, South Carolina was probably worse. The are few collectors, and what few collectors there are seem to focus only on very narrow areas. More recently, a few new collectors have caused an increase in demand. Material has never been common, so the market is now relatively good.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, South Carolina rates as the 21st state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 56.07%. It ranks 45th in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 0.62%. The overall rank is 40th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
