If Washington, D.C. were a state, the demand for postal history would make it the worst state. There are few collectors who collect D.C. material as they collect other states. Most of the covers are purchased by collectors for very different reasons. Needless to say, a more traditional state postal history collection focusing on D.C. would be unimpeded by competition.

Among the 50 states, the District of Columbia, R.P.O.'s and Streetcars, District of Columbia rates as the 26th state in terms of percentage of covers sold at 53.61%. It ranks 52nd in terms of the value of covers sold as percentage of all town cancels sold at 0.40%. The overall rank is 46th. This is a ten year running average. The most recent trends are about the same.
